Take the right words to the plan
Have your treating professional describe the health problem in everyday words. Then ask the plan whether that exact product and use fit its rules.
The medicines a plan covers appear on its list called a formulary. With prior authorization, a request goes to the plan for payment approval ahead of time.
Check the care around the prescription
- Is the telehealth visit included under my plan?
- Is there a separate membership that I would pay myself?
- How would lab work be billed?
- What would I pay at the pharmacy if the request is approved?
Keep each answer separate. A reply about the visit does not answer the question about the prescription. Ask for a written estimate where one is available.
Make sense of an uncertain reply
If the reply is unclear, ask what remains to be decided. Is the medicine excluded, is a document missing, or is the request still being reviewed?
Ask for unfamiliar plan terms to be explained. For example, ask what amount you would pay yourself before the plan contributes, rather than guessing from the word deductible.
Before paying a care fee
Ask whether the service charges while a coverage request is pending. Also ask what choices remain if payment is refused.
Keep the plan’s reply and the service’s fee terms together. Return to them when comparing cash payment with using insurance.
